Converting CPC to CPM: Formulas & Normalization
Because search networks often price inventory on a Cost Per Click (CPC) basis while display and video networks often price on a Cost Per Mille (CPM) basis, comparing costs requires connecting both metrics through Click-Through Rate (CTR).
CPC to CPM Formula
Where CTR is entered as a percentage (e.g. 2 for 2%) and divided by 100 to yield its decimal equivalent (0.02).
CPM to CPC Formula
Step-by-Step Worked Conversion Example
Suppose you are evaluating a search ad campaign with an average CPC of $2.00 and an average CTR of 2.0%:
- Normalize CTR percentage to decimal:
2.0% ÷ 100 = 0.02 - Calculate cost per single impression:
$2.00 × 0.02 = $0.04 - Scale up to 1,000 impressions:
$0.04 × 1,000 = $40.00 CPM
An advertiser paying $2.00 per click at a 2% CTR is effectively paying $40.00 CPM for impression exposure.
Strategic Comparison: When to Bid CPC vs CPM
| Strategy Consideration | CPC Bidding | CPM Bidding |
|---|---|---|
| Primary Objective | Traffic, clicks, and lead generation. | Brand reach, video views, and awareness. |
| High CTR Advantage | Fixed cost per click regardless of CTR. | Higher CTR drives more clicks for the same fixed CPM cost. |
| Low CTR Protection | Zero cost incurred if ads receive no clicks. | Full CPM cost incurred even with low click counts. |
